Marshfield Clinic Research Institute recognizes UMASH researchers’

OCTOBER 2022

The Marshfield Clinic Research Institute recently hosted the Research Spotlight event on October 12, 2022, where UMASH researchers, Dr. Florence Becot and Dr. Casper “Cap” Bendixsen were highlighted. Dr. Becot presented her research on Using photovoice to extend farm safety and health research and Dr. Bendixsen was awarded the 2022 recipient of the Gwen D. Sebold Fellowship. The fellowship has been given by D. David “Dewey” Sebold since 1988 to recognize an outstanding medical researcher and support continued research in his or her field. Recipients receive $5,000 and a memorial plaque presented by Sebold. Congratulations, Cap!

Dr. Florence Becot

UMASH was recently renewed as one of twelve Centers for Agricultural Safety and Health across the nation, and we are so fortunate to have talented and committed researchers like Dr. Bendixen and Dr. Becot on our team. Dr. Bendixen will be spearheading a continuation of the Rural firefighters Delivering Agricultural Safety and Health (RF-DASH) project. Dr. Becot will be leading the first study in the U.S. to conduct an in-depth regional assessment of farmers’ help-seeking behaviors and their connections to mental health outcomes. Read more about our recent renewal and all of the research projects funded here.

Dr. Bendixsen

As director of the National Farm Medicine Center since 2019, Dr. Bendixsen also works with the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety (NCCRAHS), and other agricultural safety and health centers funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). He is a scientific advisor to the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH) and is an investigator and associate director with the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center (UMASH). At UMASH, he leads Rural Firefighters Delivering Agricultural Safety and Health (RF-DASH). As a former firefighter himself, his experience and passion for this group’s potential has led to 10 years of consistent NIOSH funding and numerous EMS-to-farmer/rancher connections and training.

We do remarkable work here with our colleagues around the world every day. We make other peoples’ lives healthier and happier as a result of our work. I truly believe that.

Dr. Casper Bendixsen
