The UMASH 2021 Annual Report is online and ready to read.
The annual report is an opportunity for UMASH to share with the public an overview of our center and showcase the research, outreach, engagement and evaluation projects from the past year. This compilation is also a good time for us to reflect future opportunities as well as past challenges and how they were met.
The 27-page report describes our efforts in creating, promoting, partnering and evaluating occupational safety and health for agricultural workers.

These are just some of the highlights featured in this year’s report:
- MINNESOTA FARMFEST – The UMASH team partnered with colleagues to offer the UMASH Safety Demonstration Pavilion with live daily safety demonstrations on grain bins, ATVs, PTO, and tractor rollover rescue.
- NORA SYMPOSIUM – UMASH once again partnered with the Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety (MCOHS) to host the 2021 NORA Symposium with keynote speaker Dr. Mike Osterholm. The theme was COVID-19 in the Workplace: Creating Safe Workspaces.
- EMERGING ZOONOTIC DISEASE – People having regular animal contact are at the front line for exposure to known and emerging pathogens, and veterinarians provide a unique window into occupational risks for emerging zoonotic diseases. Preliminary data suggest higher prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA in swine veterinarians compared to companion animal veterinarians.
- AGING ON THE FARM – Occupational Therapy (OT) students worked in small groups with rural volunteer participants in a faculty-led and supervised telehealth OT program. The webinars are publicly available on the UMASH website.
