Bold and Humble – Engaging in Anti-Racist Public Health

You must be bold, brave, and courageous and find a way… to get in the way -John Lewis

MAY 2021

Maria Bertrand, UMASH Research Assistant, recently attended the Minnesota Public Health Association (MPHA) 2021 Conference: Bold and Humble – Engaging in Anti-Racist Public Health. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a major initiative at the University of Minnesota and within the School of Public Health. As a graduate student in Public Health Administration & Policy, Maria’s personal and professional interest in the subject matter provided an opportunity for UMASH to further enhance outreach efforts on the topic.

HACER (Hispanic Advocacy and Community Empowerment Through Research), an organization based out of Saint Paul, MN presented Addressing the Unique Challenges of Latine Minnesotans During the COVID-19 Pandemic. This particular session discussed research surrounding the unique barriers Latine Minnesotans face when accessing COVID-19 care. This information is extremely useful to UMASH and to Maria, who oversees UMASH’s social media accounts. The overall conference provided a number of thoughtful ideas which Maria can implement when sharing and creating effective social media messaging.
